Frequently Asked Questions

Doctors Bridge helps internationally trained physicians continue the work they love—caring for patients—by supporting their return to medical practice in the United States. Recent state-level changes have created new pathways to provisional medical licensure, and we guide doctors through these opportunities with clarity and care.

Doctors Bridge works with physicians who completed their medical education outside the United States and are looking for a way to practice medicine in the United States. Many of the doctors we support have years of experience, deep clinical skill and a strong desire to serve patients in their new communities.

A provisional (or alternative) medical license allows qualified internationally trained physicians to practice medicine under specific conditions—often with supervision—while completing remaining U.S. requirements. These pathways were created to address physician shortages and recognize the value of experienced doctors trained abroad.

In many cases, yes. Some states now offer pathways that do not require repeating a full U.S. residency, depending on your background and experience. Requirements vary, but many physicians are surprised to learn they may already qualify. View our State Requirements section to learn more.

Several states have recently expanded or introduced new licensure pathways for internationally trained physicians, including Texas, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and others. As these rules continue to evolve, we stay closely informed and help doctors identify where their experience best aligns with current opportunities. Yes. Doctors Bridge walks alongside you throughout the process—helping you understand requirements, organize documentation, and coordinate with employers and licensing authorities. While final decisions rest with state medical boards, you will not be navigating the process alone.

Doctors Bridge understands that immigration questions are often part of the journey and these positions do require work authorization. While we are not an immigration law firm, we work closely with employers who are familiar with lawful work authorization and sponsorship options for healthcare professionals and can refer you to legal counsel to assist.

Every physician’s path is different. Some placements move forward in a matter of months, while others take longer depending on visas licensing and documentation. Doctors Bridge provides honest timelines and regular updates so there are no surprises.
